Mike Hanas, Senior Associate

Mike has 36 years of experience as an educator, having served as the Head of San Francisco Friends School after a long tenure as Head of Carolina Friends School in Durham. He earned his Master’s Degree in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy at Harvard, and his leadership experience runs the gamut from crisis management to fundraising to team building. The focus of his work includes executive coaching, strategic planning, fortification of leadership teams, and conflict resolution.

What Mike enjoys most is partnering with individuals who are extending themselves, whether as Executive Directors, Senior Leaders, or Trustees. A certified executive coach through the Cal Berkeley Haas School of Business, he’s drawn to untangling knotty challenges, creating a sense of possibility and pathways for leadership teams, and augmenting the capacity of leaders to create meaningful and positive change.

While Mike enjoyed much about his time in the Bay Area, he and his wife Sue have returned home to Chapel Hill in large part to be near their daughter Kyle, a UNC-MSW grad serving clients as a Mental Health Counselor in the Triangle, and their son Matt, a UNC grad pursuing his Master’s Degree in Sports and Performance Psychology.

Fun fact: Mike and Carolina Friends School were among moss+ross’s first clients, and the firm’s support of nonprofits, which Mike tracked while away, made easy his interest in contributing what he can.
