moss+ross is proud to be a trusted consulting partner to the SECU Foundation’s Mission Development Grant (MDG) Program, helping nonprofits across North Carolina assess their capacity, set priorities, and build the systems, leadership, and resources they need to thrive. Through the MDG Program, moss+ross provides assessments and coaching to small nonprofits that support program expansion, leadership development, and long-term sustainability. Our team meets each organization where they are, offering tailored solutions that respect their size, culture, and community while positioning them for measurable growth. Since 2017, the SECU Foundation has invested in more than 120 organizations, awarding $40,000 over two years to each grantee. Tailored Approach Adapts to Needs No two nonprofits are alike. MDG grantees are deeply rooted in their communities and typically apply for assistance so they can blend best-practice management practices with cultural and geographic sensitivities. Our team designs our consulting approach to align with an organization’s existing operational and programmatic structure to ensure recommendations are realistic, actionable, and able to move the organization toward its mission goals. Five Steps for Building Organizational Capacity 1. Begin with a Clear Assessment Start by understanding where your organization is today. Use a structured tool, such as an organizational assessment or simplified campaign readiness scorecard, tailored to your size and context to reveal strengths, gaps, and priorities. 2. Prioritize Investment in People An organization’s leadership and staff are its most valuable assets. Consider where roles may need to be added or redefined, from hiring an executive director to expanding your board. Strengthen board governance policies and leadership succession planning to ensure stability. 3. Align Plans and Resources Align your financial, marketing, fundraising, and program strategies under one coordinated plan. This integration streamlines operations, reduces duplication, and reinforces consistent messaging across all activities. 4. Strengthen Fundraising Strategies Create a fundraising plan that aligns with your current resources, staffing, and donor relationships. Focus on setting clear goals, identifying and prioritizing prospects, crafting a compelling case for support, and ensuring your board and staff are equipped to engage donors effectively. Sequence activities so each step builds momentum toward larger goals, allowing fundraising growth to be both ambitious and sustainable. 5. Measure, Learn, and Adjust Adopt simple, clear metrics to track results. Regularly evaluate outcomes, make informed adjustments, and use what you learn to refine future strategies and build a culture of continuous improvement. Any nonprofit can use these five core practices to strengthen capacity and advance its mission. When people, systems, and strategy are aligned, a nonprofit can move from surviving to thriving. It’s our privilege to help make that transformation happen every day.
