Strategies for Building Strength & Capacity

Our community is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis, and many nonprofits are on the front lines of the suffering. Our moss+ross team is inspired every day by our clients who are investing in new ways to support, encourage, and offer real solutions that help people struggling with mental health to secure housing, food, education, healthcare, recovery from addiction, and more.

In recent months, we have worked alongside numerous leaders finding ways to support those most impacted by mental health issues including Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain and Durham & Orange Counties, Camp Corral, Durham Public Schools Foundation, Foundation of Hope, Healing Transitions, NAMI-Wake, NC Child, NC Arts in Action, and WakeMed Health & Hospitals. These incredible partners are trailblazers in many regards, coming out of the pandemic with a renewed and stronger-than-ever focus on refining approaches, forging partnerships, and raising funds to address the needs of children, families, and entire communities.

Among our clients, the specific strategies for achieving their missions differ, but we observe common indicators of healthy nonprofits that provide strength for their work:

  • Thoughtful Planning: Strategic planning is where everything begins. Successful organizations prepare for opportunities and challenges by using the Strategic Plan as a roadmap to chart a course for the future. For many clients, this leads to campaign planning to create new resources to support the vision. Others partner with us for counsel on engaging supporters, developing communication strategies, or building capacity.
  • Strong Leadership: Leading a nonprofit that addresses societal challenges is fulfilling, and can also be overwhelming. We coach established and aspiring nonprofit leaders to help sharpen sustainable leadership practices based on our deep understanding of nonprofit management. We offer transition planning and onboarding for changes in executive leadership, knowing how the success of a nonprofit executive impacts our community.
  • Skilled Talent: Having the right people in the right jobs increases productivity and lowers stress. Our executive search services help organizations find great leaders, and m+r interim solutions® helps fill gaps with temporary, professional support. We help Boards strengthen their contributions as well by leading board retreats, visioning, and succession planning.

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, created to advocate for the millions who are living with mental health conditions. The moss+ross team appreciates the nonprofits doing this work every month of the year, and the dedicated staff, board and volunteers who make a difference.
